Odd-eyed cat
Cat with two different colored eyes

An odd-eyed cat is a cat with one blue eye and one eye either green, yellow, or brown. This is a form of heterochromia, a condition that results in a difference in coloration, usually of the iris but also of hair or skin. Odd-eyed cats are most commonly found in white-colored cats, but the condition can appear in any color variant. The scientific term for this condition is complete heterochromia.
Causes[edit]
Odd-eyed cats have their unique appearance due to the presence of a genetic condition called Heterochromia Iridis. This condition can be inherited as an autosomal dominant trait, meaning that it can be passed down from one generation to the next. It is often associated with the white fur gene, which is linked to the lack of melanin production. In cats, the gene responsible for white fur and heterochromia is called the W gene. This gene can cause a lack of pigment in one eye, resulting in the odd-eyed appearance.
Genetics[edit]
The genetics behind odd-eyed cats is closely related to the genetics of their coat color. The W gene, which causes white coats in cats, can also affect eye color by preventing melanin from being deposited in one of the eyes during development. This leads to one blue eye, while the other eye can be green, yellow, or brown, depending on the amount of melanin present.
Health implications[edit]
Generally, odd-eyed cats do not face any health issues directly related to their heterochromia. However, it is important to note that cats with the white coat gene, particularly those with one or two blue eyes, may have a higher risk of being deaf. This is not directly related to the heterochromia itself but to the genetic factors associated with the white coat and blue eye genes. Regular health check-ups are recommended to monitor their well-being.
Cultural significance[edit]
Throughout history, odd-eyed cats have been subjects of myths and superstitions. In many cultures, they are considered to bring good luck and are often seen as special or magical creatures. Their unique appearance has made them popular pets and show animals.
