History
The Oban Distillery was established in 1794 by brothers Hugh and John Stevenson. The distillery has a rich history, with the town of Oban growing around it. Over the years, the distillery has undergone several changes in ownership and has faced numerous challenges, including a fire in 1890 and economic difficulties during the World Wars. Despite these challenges, the distillery has continued to produce its unique style of whisky.
Production
The production process at Oban Distillery is traditional and largely manual. The distillery has only two pot stills, making it one of the smallest in Scotland. The whisky is made using malted barley, yeast, and water from a local source. The distillation process is slow and careful, resulting in a whisky with a distinctive character.
Products
Oban Distillery produces a range of single malt Scotch whiskies. The core range includes the Oban 14 Year Old, the Oban 18 Year Old, and the Oban Distillers Edition. Each of these whiskies has its own unique characteristics, but all share the distinctive Oban style, which is often described as a combination of rich, fruity flavours and a hint of sea salt.
Visiting the Distillery
The Oban Distillery is open to the public for tours. Visitors can learn about the history of the distillery, see the traditional production process in action, and sample some of the distillery's whiskies. The distillery also has a shop where visitors can purchase bottles of Oban whisky and other merchandise.
