Nueva Esparta

Nueva Esparta is one of the 23 states of Venezuela. It comprises three islands: Margarita, Coche, and Cubagua. The state is located in the northeastern part of the country, in the Caribbean Sea. The capital city is La Asunción.
History[edit]
Nueva Esparta was established as a state in 1909. The name "Nueva Esparta" (New Sparta) was given in honor of the heroic resistance of the islanders during the Venezuelan War of Independence, reminiscent of the Spartan warriors of ancient Greece.

Nueva Esparta covers an area of approximately 1,150 square kilometers. The state is characterized by its coastal and insular geography, with numerous beaches, bays, and peninsulas. The climate is tropical, with a dry season from January to May and a wet season from June to December.
Islands[edit]
- Margarita Island: The largest and most populous island, known for its tourism industry, beautiful beaches, and historical sites.
- Coche Island: Known for its tranquil beaches and water sports.
- Cubagua Island: The smallest of the three, historically significant for its early colonial settlements and pearl fishing.
Economy[edit]
The economy of Nueva Esparta is primarily based on tourism, fishing, and commerce. The state is a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists, attracted by its beaches, resorts, and duty-free shopping.
Culture[edit]
Nueva Esparta has a rich cultural heritage, influenced by its indigenous, Spanish, and African roots. The state celebrates numerous festivals and traditions, including the Festival of the Virgin of the Valley, the patron saint of eastern Venezuela.
Transportation[edit]
