Northern Mariana Islands (pronunciation: /ˈnɔːrðərn məˈrɪənə ˈaɪləndz/) is a group of 14 islands located in the western Pacific Ocean. The islands are a commonwealth of the United States.
Etymology
The name "Mariana" comes from Queen Mariana of Austria, widow of Spain's Philip IV. The islands were named in her honor by Spanish explorers in the late 17th century.
Geography
The Northern Mariana Islands are part of the Mariana Archipelago, which also includes Guam, the southernmost island. The islands are divided into four municipalities: Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and the Northern Islands.
Health Care
Health care in the Northern Mariana Islands is primarily provided by the Commonwealth Health Care Corporation (CHCC), which operates the only hospital in the territory, the Commonwealth Health Center. There are also several clinics and health centers throughout the islands.
