Noilly Prat is a brand of vermouth, a type of aromatized wine, from France. It is named after its creator, Joseph Noilly, and his son-in-law, Claudius Prat. The brand is known for its unique production process and distinct flavor profile.
History
Joseph Noilly developed the first formula for Noilly Prat in 1813 in Lyon, France. The brand was officially established in 1855 when Claudius Prat joined the business. The production was moved to Marseillan, where the unique climate and environment contributed to the distinctive taste of Noilly Prat.
Production
The production of Noilly Prat involves a complex process that includes the selection of fine white wines, aging, and infusion with a secret blend of herbs and spices. The wines are aged outdoors in oak casks, exposed to the natural elements. This process, known as the "maceration", gives Noilly Prat its unique taste.
Varieties
There are three main varieties of Noilly Prat: Original Dry, Rouge, and Ambré. Each variety has a unique flavor profile, with the Original Dry being the most popular and widely recognized.
Original Dry
The Original Dry is a pale straw-colored vermouth with a dry, full-bodied taste. It is made from a blend of white wines, aged and infused with a secret blend of herbs and spices.
Rouge
The Rouge is a rich, ruby-colored vermouth with a sweet, full-bodied taste. It is made from a blend of red and white wines, aged and infused with a secret blend of herbs and spices.
Ambré
The Ambré is a golden amber-colored vermouth with a sweet, full-bodied taste. It is made from a blend of white wines, aged and infused with a secret blend of herbs and spices.
Uses
Noilly Prat is often used as an ingredient in cocktails, such as the Martini and the Negroni. It can also be enjoyed on its own, served chilled or over ice.
