History
New Albany was founded in 1813 by Joel, Abner, and Nathaniel Scribner. The city was named after Albany, New York, as many of the early settlers were from that area. During the 19th century, New Albany became a major center for steamboat building and was known as the "Steamboat Capital of the World". The city played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, helping enslaved individuals escape to freedom.
