Nevi'im
Nevi'im (נְבִיאִים, Prophets) is the second main division of the Tanakh, the Hebrew Bible. This section consists of the narrative books that describe the lives and messages of the prophets of the Israelites. Nevi'im is subdivided into two parts: the Former Prophets (Nevi'im Rishonim נביאים ראשונים) and the Latter Prophets (Nevi'im Aharonim נביאים אחרונים).
Former Prophets
The Former Prophets include four books:
- Joshua - Describes the conquest of Canaan.
- Judges - Covers the time from the conquest of Canaan to the establishment of the monarchy.
- Samuel - A two-part book that discusses the rule of Samuel, the reign of Saul, and the rise of King David.
- Kings - A two-part book that narrates the history of the kings of Israel and Judah up to the destruction of the Kingdom of Judah and the Babylonian exile.
Latter Prophets
The Latter Prophets are divided into the Major Prophets and the Twelve Minor Prophets:
- Major Prophets
* Isaiah - Contains the prophecies attributed to the prophet Isaiah. * Jeremiah - Consists of the prophecies and life events of Jeremiah. * Ezekiel - Contains the visions and prophecies of Ezekiel.
- Minor Prophets - A collection of twelve shorter prophetic books:
* Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.
Themes and Theology
Nevi'im deals with the themes of prophecy, the role of the prophets as God's messengers, and the struggle of the Israelites to remain faithful to the Torah amidst various challenges. It explores the consequences of the Israelites' faithfulness or unfaithfulness to their covenant with God. The books also discuss social justice, idolatry, and the relationship between God and humanity.
Importance in Judaism
In Judaism, Nevi'im is not only a historical account but also a source of theological and moral teachings. The haftarah readings from the Prophets are an integral part of Jewish liturgy, especially during Sabbath and Jewish holidays.
