Juice Plus
Juice Plus is a brand of dietary supplements made from the juice powder concentrates of various fruits and vegetables. It is produced by Natural Alternatives International of San Marcos, California, for National Safety Associates (NSA; Collierville, Tennessee). Introduced in 1993, Juice Plus claims to be the "next best thing to fruits and vegetables," however, the product's effectiveness has been disputed by several medical and consumer watchdog groups.
History[edit]
Juice Plus was introduced in 1993 by National Safety Associates (NSA), a company founded in 1970 by Jay Martin, a school teacher turned entrepreneur. NSA initially sold fire detectors and air and water filtration systems before introducing Juice Plus to the market.
Products[edit]
Juice Plus products are made by juicing whole fruits and vegetables. The juice is then dried and mixed to create the Juice Plus fruit blend, vegetable blend, and vineyard blend. The blends are then encapsulated or turned into chewables. The company also offers Juice Plus Complete, a shake mix, and Juice Plus+ Omega Blend, a plant-based combination of omega 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9 fatty acids.
Health Claims and Controversy[edit]
Juice Plus has been marketed as improving health and boosting the immune system. However, these claims have been disputed by several medical and consumer watchdog groups. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings to the company about its marketing practices. In addition, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has classified Juice Plus as a "pill of dubious value."
Research[edit]
Several studies have been conducted on Juice Plus, with mixed results. Some studies have found benefits, such as improved immune function and reduced oxidative stress. However, other studies have found no benefits, and some have even suggested potential harm. The quality and independence of the research have also been questioned.
