Nandrolone cypionate
Nandrolone cypionate (pronunciation: nan-DROH-lone SIH-pee-ohn-ate) is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) and a derivative of testosterone. It is primarily used in veterinary medicine, specifically for treating anemia and osteoporosis in elderly patients.
Etymology
The term "Nandrolone" is derived from the words "nandrol" and "one". "Nandrol" is a term used in organic chemistry to refer to the 19-nor (meaning "lacking a carbon atom at the 19th position") derivative of testosterone. The suffix "one" indicates that the compound contains a ketone group.
"Cypionate" is derived from "cypionic acid", an eight-carbon atom carboxylic acid used to esterify steroids in order to delay the release of the drug into the bloodstream.
Pharmacology
Nandrolone cypionate is a prodrug of nandrolone. It is administered via intramuscular injection and is subsequently hydrolyzed in vivo to free nandrolone. Nandrolone is a potent anabolic steroid and has a high affinity for the androgen receptor. It promotes growth of muscle tissue and bone, and has less masculinizing effects than testosterone.
