Musculoskeletal system
Musculoskeletal System
The Musculoskeletal System (pronunciation: muhs-kyuh-loh-skel-i-tl sis-tuhm) is an organ system that provides the human body with physical support, movement, and shape. It is composed of the skeletal system, the muscular system, and the connective tissues that bind them together, including tendons, ligaments, and cartilage.
Etymology
The term "musculoskeletal" is derived from the Latin words "musculus" meaning "little mouse" (referring to the shape and movement of muscles under the skin) and "sceletus" meaning "dried up" (referring to the dry and hard nature of bones).
Skeletal System
The skeletal system is the body's framework, composed of bones and joints. It provides structure, support, and protection to the body's organs. It also produces blood cells and stores minerals.
Muscular System
The muscular system is composed of muscle tissue that can contract to produce movement. It includes the cardiac muscle, smooth muscle, and skeletal muscle. The muscular system works in conjunction with the skeletal system to control movement of the body.
Connective Tissues
Connective tissues in the musculoskeletal system include tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. Tendons connect muscle to bone, allowing for movement. Ligaments connect bones to other bones, providing stability. Cartilage provides a smooth surface for joints, reducing friction and acting as a cushion.
