Mosquito net

A mosquito net (/mɒˈskiːtoʊ nɛt/) is a type of meshed curtain that is circumferentially draped over a bed or a sleeping area, to offer the sleeper barrier protection against bites and stings from mosquitos, flies, and other pest insects, and thus against the diseases they may carry.

Etymology

The term "mosquito net" is derived from the Spanish word 'mosquito' which means 'little fly' and the English word 'net' which means 'an open fabric of string or rope or wire woven together at regular intervals'.

Usage

Mosquito nets are often used in tropical countries where the rate of malaria and other diseases spread by insects is high. They are hung over beds and sleeping areas to protect the sleeper from insect bites. Mosquito nets are also used in other situations where the protection against insects is required.

Types

There are several types of mosquito nets, including but not limited to:

  • Curtain nets: These are hung from the ceiling and draped over the bed. They are usually rectangular or circular in shape.
  • Tent nets: These are self-supporting nets that do not need to be hung from the ceiling. They are often used for camping or outdoor use.
  • Window and door nets: These are fixed to the frames of windows and doors to prevent insects from entering a room.

Related terms

  • Insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs): These are mosquito nets treated with insecticides that kill or repel mosquitos. They are a form of personal protection that has been shown to reduce malaria illness, severe disease, and death due to malaria in endemic regions.
  • Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs): These are a type of mosquito net that is factory-treated with a proprietary process that binds a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide to the netting material. LLINs are designed to remain effective for multiple years.
