Montreal (muhn-tree-awl)

Montreal (pronounced /ˌmʌntriˈɔːl/; French: Montréal, pronounced [mɔ̃ʁeal] (listen)) is the most populous city in the Canadian province of Quebec and the second-most populous city in Canada. The city is centred on the Island of Montreal, which got its name from the same origin as the city, and a few much smaller peripheral islands, the largest of which is Île Bizard.

Etymology

The name Montreal is derived from Mount Royal, a triple-peaked hill in the heart of the city. The name was first applied to the island and was officially adopted when the city was incorporated in 1832. The name is believed to be an homage to King Francis I of France, who named the hill "Mont Royal" in 1535 during his expedition along the Saint Lawrence River.
