Monsoon

Monsoon (/mɒnˈsuːn/) is a seasonal reversing wind accompanied by corresponding changes in precipitation, but is now used to describe seasonal changes in atmospheric circulation and precipitation associated with the asymmetric heating of land and sea.

Etymology

The term "monsoon" comes from the Arabic word "mausim" which translates to "season". This is in reference to the seasonal winds that occur in many parts of the world.

Definition

Monsoons are characterized by a seasonal shift in wind direction, usually accompanied by changes in precipitation. These changes are due to the differential heating of land and sea, which creates a pressure gradient that drives the winds.
