Mitiglinide

Mitiglinide (pronounced mi-tig-li-nide) is a type of antidiabetic drug used in the management of type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the class of drugs known as meglitinides, which stimulate the release of insulin from the pancreas.

Etymology

The term "Mitiglinide" is derived from the chemical name "2-(2S)-2-benzyl-3(sulfanylpropanamido)propanoic acid". The suffix "-glinide" is common among meglitinides, indicating its drug class.

Usage

Mitiglinide is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, particularly in patients who cannot control their blood sugar levels through diet and exercise alone. It works by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin, a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels.

Related Terms

  • Meglitinides: A class of drugs that stimulate the release of insulin from the pancreas. Other drugs in this class include repaglinide and nateglinide.
  • Insulin: A hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates the amount of glucose in the blood.

  • Pancreas: A gland located in the abdomen that produces insulin and other important enzymes and hormones.

Side Effects

Like all medications, mitiglinide can cause side effects. Common side effects include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), weight gain, and joint pain. If these or any other side effects occur, patients should consult their healthcare provider.

Precautions

Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to mitiglinide or any other component of the formulation should not use this medication. It should also be used with caution in patients with liver or kidney disease.
