Milbemycin oxime
Milbemycin Oxime
Milbemycin oxime (pronounced: mil-be-my-sin ox-ime) is a macrocyclic lactone antiparasitic agent used in veterinary medicine. It is primarily used to prevent heartworm disease and control hookworm, roundworm, and whipworm infections in dogs.
Etymology
The term "Milbemycin" is derived from the Streptomyces hygroscopicus subsp. aureolacrimosus, a strain of bacteria from which the drug was originally isolated. The suffix "oxime" refers to the specific chemical structure of the drug, which includes an oxime functional group.
Usage
Milbemycin oxime is administered orally to dogs. It is often combined with other medications, such as Praziquantel or Lufenuron, to increase its spectrum of activity against various parasites.
Mechanism of Action
Milbemycin oxime works by disrupting the nervous system of parasites, leading to their paralysis and death. It does this by enhancing the effects of neurotransmitters in the parasite's nervous system.
Side Effects
Common side effects of milbemycin oxime include vomiting, diarrhea, and lack of appetite. In rare cases, it can cause neurological side effects such as tremors, seizures, and ataxia.
