Mike Pence
Mike Pence is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 48th Vice President of the United States from 2017 to 2021 under President Donald Trump. Born on June 7, 1959, in Columbus, Indiana, Pence was raised in a Catholic family and later identified as an evangelical Christian. He graduated from Hanover College and earned a law degree from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
Before his tenure as vice president, Pence served as the 50th Governor of Indiana from 2013 to 2017. His governorship was marked by his conservative stance on various issues, including education reform, tax cuts, and healthcare. Prior to serving as governor, Pence was a member of the United States House of Representatives for 12 years, representing Indiana's 2nd and 6th districts. During his time in Congress, he was known for his conservative views, particularly on issues related to fiscal policy, abortion, and immigration.
As Vice President, Pence was involved in several key aspects of the Trump administration's agenda. He played a significant role in the administration's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, chairing the White House Coronavirus Task Force. Pence was also a staunch advocate for the administration's policies on tax reform, deregulation, and conservative judicial appointments.
Pence's loyalty to President Trump was a defining feature of his vice presidency, although he drew national attention for his role in certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election. On January 6, 2021, amidst the Capitol riot, Pence fulfilled his constitutional duty by certifying Joe Biden's victory, a move that put him at odds with Trump and some of his supporters.
After leaving office, Pence has remained active in political discussions, particularly regarding the future of the Republican Party and conservative values in America. He has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
Throughout his career, Pence has been a controversial figure, admired by conservatives for his staunch defense of conservative values and criticized by liberals for his policies on social issues, particularly regarding LGBTQ+ rights and abortion.
