Middleburgh (pronounced /ˈmɪdəlbɜːrɡ/) is a town located in Schoharie County, New York, United States. The population was 3,515 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Middelburg, Netherlands, the hometown of some early settlers.
Etymology
The name "Middleburgh" is derived from the Dutch city of Middelburg, in the province of Zeeland, the Netherlands. The town was named after Middelburg by early Dutch settlers who hailed from there.
Geography
Middleburgh is located in the southern part of Schoharie County and is bordered by the towns of Fulton, Broome, and Schoharie to the north, Rensselaerville to the east, Broome and Gilboa to the west, and Conesville and Gilboa to the south.
History
Middleburgh was first settled around 1713, primarily by Palatine Germans. The town was formed from the Town of Schoharie in 1797.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 3,515 people, 1,462 households, and 1,002 families residing in the town. The population density was 57.8 people per square mile.
Education
The town is served by the Middleburgh Central School District, which includes Middleburgh Elementary School and Middleburgh Junior/Senior High School.
Health Facilities
Middleburgh has a local health center, the Middleburgh Medical Center, which provides primary care services to the community.
