Metlakatla is a census-designated place (CDP) located on Annette Island in the Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area, in the state of Alaska, United States. It is the only Indian reservation in Alaska and is home to the Tsimshian people.

History

Metlakatla was founded in 1887 by a group of Tsimshian people led by William Duncan, who relocated from British Columbia to Annette Island. The community was established as a Christian mission and has since developed into a vibrant community with a rich cultural heritage.

Geography

Metlakatla is located on the western shore of Annette Island, which is part of the Alexander Archipelago in southeastern Alaska. The island is surrounded by the waters of the Inside Passage, a network of waterways that provide a vital transportation route for the region.
