Merck KGaA (pronounced: /mɛrk kɛɡeɪɑː/) is a multinational pharmaceutical, chemical and life sciences company headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany. It is one of the world's oldest operating chemical and pharmaceutical companies, as well as one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world.

Etymology

The name "Merck" is derived from the family that established the company's roots in the 17th century. The KGaA (Kommanditgesellschaft auf Aktien) structure is a German corporate designation indicating a partnership limited by shares.

History

Merck KGaA was founded in 1668 by Friedrich Jacob Merck, an apothecary, in Darmstadt, Germany. The company has since grown into a global pharmaceutical and chemical company, with a presence in more than 66 countries and a workforce of over 50,000 employees.
