Mehriban Aliyeva (pronounced: meh-ree-bahn a-lee-yeh-va) is the First Vice President of Azerbaijan and the wife of the President Ilham Aliyev. She is also a prominent philanthropist, social activist and patron of arts in the country.
Etymology
The name Mehriban is of Persian origin and means "kind" or "affectionate". Aliyeva is a common surname in Azerbaijan and is derived from the name Ali, which is of Arabic origin and means "exalted" or "noble".
Biography
Mehriban Aliyeva was born on 26 August 1964 in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. She graduated from the First Moscow State Medical University in 1988 and married Ilham Aliyev, the son of then-President Heydar Aliyev, in 1983. They have three children together.
In 2004, Aliyeva founded the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the memory of the national leader of Azerbaijan. The foundation is involved in projects promoting education, culture, sports, and healthcare in Azerbaijan and abroad.
In 2017, she was appointed as the First Vice President of Azerbaijan by her husband, President Ilham Aliyev. This position is second only to the president in the country's hierarchy.
