Meharry Medical College (pronounced: muh-HARRY) is a historically black academic health science center located in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1876, it is one of the oldest medical institutions for African Americans in the United States.
Etymology
The college is named after the Meharry brothers, Samuel and Alexander Meharry, who provided the initial endowment for the establishment of the college. The Meharry brothers were inspired to fund the college after receiving help from a freed slave during a snowstorm.
History
Meharry Medical College was founded in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College under the auspices of the Freedman's Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1900, Central Tennessee College changed its name to Walden University, and the medical department was renamed as Meharry Medical College.
Academics
Meharry Medical College offers a variety of degree programs in the health sciences. These include Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.), Master of Science in Public Health (M.S.P.H.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees. The college is divided into three schools: the School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry, and the School of Graduate Studies and Research.
Affiliations
Meharry Medical College is affiliated with several hospitals and health systems for clinical training, including the Nashville General Hospital and the Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
Notable Alumni
Many notable physicians, dentists, and researchers have graduated from Meharry Medical College. These include Dr. David Satcher, former U.S. Surgeon General, and Dr. Rosalyn P. Scott, the first African American woman to become a thoracic surgeon.
