Medical school in Uganda (pronunciation: /ˈmɛdɪkəl skuːl ɪn juːˈɡændə/) refers to the institutions that provide medical education in the East African country of Uganda. These schools offer various degrees in the field of medicine, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs.
Etymology
The term "medical school" originates from the Latin words "medicus" meaning "doctor" and "schola" meaning "school". The term "Uganda" is derived from the Swahili language, referring to the Kingdom of Buganda, which historically encompassed a portion of the present-day country.
History
The first medical school in Uganda, Makerere University College of Health Sciences, was established in 1924. Since then, several other medical schools have been established, including Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Gulu University, and Kampala International University.
Curriculum
The curriculum in Ugandan medical schools typically includes a combination of theoretical coursework and practical training. Subjects studied include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Clinical Medicine.
