This principle greatly simplifies the design of mechanisms by allowing the designer to focus on mechanisms where participants truthfully report their private information.

There are several types of mechanisms that are commonly studied, including auctions, voting systems, and public goods provision mechanisms. Each type of mechanism addresses specific types of problems and desired outcomes.
