Mechanical ventilation
Mechanical Ventilation
Mechanical ventilation (pronunciation: meh-ka-ni-kal ven-ti-lay-shun) is a method to mechanically assist or replace spontaneous breathing. This may involve a machine called a ventilator, or the breathing may be assisted manually by a suitably qualified professional, such as an anesthesiologist, respiratory therapist, or paramedic, by compressing a bag valve mask device.
Etymology
The term "mechanical ventilation" originates from the combination of the words "mechanical", derived from the Greek word "mēkhanikos" meaning "pertaining to machines", and "ventilation", which comes from the Latin "ventilatio", meaning "a blowing".
Types of Mechanical Ventilation
Mechanical ventilation can be classified into two main types: invasive mechanical ventilation and non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Invasive mechanical ventilation involves the use of a tracheostomy or endotracheal tube to provide ventilation, while non-invasive mechanical ventilation is provided through a mask or similar device.
