Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine
Max Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine (MPI-MB) is a research institution located in Münster, Germany. It is one of the 86 institutes in the Max Planck Society, a non-profit association of German research institutes funded by the federal and state governments of Germany.
History
The MPI-MB was founded in 2001 with the aim of understanding the basic molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie the development and function of cells and tissues, and how their malfunction can lead to disease. The institute is named after Max Planck, a German theoretical physicist who is considered the father of quantum theory.
Research
The MPI-MB focuses on three main research areas: vascular biology, stem cell biology, and nanotechnology. The institute's research is interdisciplinary, combining biology, medicine, physics, and engineering.
Vascular Biology
In the field of vascular biology, researchers at the MPI-MB study the formation and function of blood vessels. They aim to understand the molecular mechanisms that regulate these processes, with a particular focus on the role of endothelial cells.
Stem Cell Biology
The MPI-MB's stem cell biology research focuses on understanding the mechanisms that regulate stem cell function and differentiation. This includes studying the role of stem cells in tissue regeneration and disease.
Nanotechnology
In the area of nanotechnology, the MPI-MB develops new methods and tools for studying biological processes at the nanoscale. This includes the development of nanoscale imaging techniques and the use of nanoparticles for drug delivery.
Facilities
The MPI-MB is housed in a modern research building that includes state-of-the-art laboratories, a high-performance computing center, and a range of core facilities. These include a microscopy center, a flow cytometry facility, and a genomics facility.
Collaboration
The MPI-MB collaborates with other research institutions and universities both within Germany and internationally. It is part of the Cells in Motion Interfaculty Centre at the University of Münster, which brings together researchers from various disciplines to study cell dynamics and imaging.
