Max Brand was the pen name of American author Frederick Schiller Faust (May 29, 1892 – May 12, 1944). He is best known for his Western novels and stories, although he wrote in a variety of genres, including historical novels, detective stories, and pulp fiction. Brand's prolific output and enduring popularity have made him a significant figure in American literature.

Early Life

Frederick Schiller Faust was born in Seattle, Washington, and was orphaned at a young age. He was raised by his aunt in California. Faust attended the University of California, Berkeley, but he did not graduate. Instead, he left to pursue a career in writing.

Career

Faust began his writing career by contributing stories to pulp magazines. He adopted the pen name Max Brand to separate his Western stories from his other works. Brand's first novel, The Untamed, was published in 1919 and introduced the character Whistlin' Dan Barry, who would appear in several subsequent novels.

Brand's writing was characterized by its vivid descriptions, fast-paced action, and complex characters. He wrote over 500 novels and numerous short stories during his career. Some of his most famous works include Destry Rides Again, Silvertip, and Dr. Kildare series.

Dr. Kildare

One of Brand's most enduring creations was the character Dr. Kildare, a young, idealistic doctor. The Dr. Kildare series began as a series of pulp stories and was later adapted into a successful film series and a popular television show. The character of Dr. Kildare became a cultural icon and helped to popularize medical dramas.

Personal Life

Faust married Dorothy Schillig in 1917, and the couple had three children. Despite his success as a writer, Faust lived a relatively modest life. He was known for his disciplined work habits, often writing for long hours each day.

Death

During World War II, Faust served as a war correspondent. He was seriously wounded in Italy in 1944 and died from his injuries. He is buried in the American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy.
