Matthew Vassar[edit]

Matthew Vassar (April 29, 1792 – June 23, 1868) was an English-born American brewer, merchant and philanthropist. He founded the Vassar College in 1861, which was the first degree-granting institution of higher education for women in the United States.

Early Life[edit]

Matthew Vassar was born in Norfolk, England. His family emigrated to the United States in 1796 and settled in Poughkeepsie, New York, where his father, James Vassar, established a brewery.

Career[edit]

In 1811, at the age of 18, Matthew Vassar took over the family's brewing business, which became one of the most successful in the region. He expanded the business and became a prominent figure in Poughkeepsie, serving as an alderman and a member of the New York State Assembly.

Philanthropy[edit]

Vassar's most notable act of philanthropy was the establishment of Vassar College. He donated $408,000 and 200 acres of land for the college, which was chartered in 1861. The college was the first in the United States to grant degrees to women.

Legacy[edit]

Matthew Vassar's legacy lives on through Vassar College, which continues to be a leading liberal arts college. His contributions to education and his pioneering role in promoting women's education are widely recognized.

Death[edit]

Vassar died on June 23, 1868, in Poughkeepsie. He is buried in the family plot in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
