Matthew Stanley Quay (September 30, 1833 – May 28, 1904) was an American political leader of the Republican Party. He served as a United States Senator from Pennsylvania and was a key figure in the political machine of the state.

Early Life and Education

Matthew Quay was born in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania. He attended Jefferson College (now Washington & Jefferson College), where he graduated in 1850. After completing his education, Quay studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1854.

Political Career

Quay's political career began in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, where he served from 1859 to 1861. During the American Civil War, he served as a colonel in the 134th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment and was later awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Fredericksburg.

After the war, Quay held various political positions, including Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and State Treasurer. He became a powerful political boss in Pennsylvania, controlling the state's Republican Party and influencing national politics.

United States Senate

Quay was first elected to the United States Senate in 1887. He served multiple terms, with a brief interruption, until his death in 1904. As a senator, Quay was known for his skillful use of patronage and his ability to manage political campaigns. He played a significant role in the election of Benjamin Harrison as President in 1888.

Legacy and Death

Matthew Quay died on May 28, 1904, in Beaver, Pennsylvania. He is remembered as a master political strategist and a dominant figure in Pennsylvania politics during his time.
