Martinique (/ˌmɑːrtɪˈniːk/; French: [maʁtinik]) is an insular region of France located in the Lesser Antilles of the West Indies in the eastern Caribbean Sea.
Etymology
The island was originally named "Jouanacaëra-Matinino" by the indigenous people, which was later changed to "Martinique" by the Europeans. The name Martinique is probably a corruption of the indigenous name for the island.
Geography
Martinique is an island in the Lesser Antilles, an archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The island is located to the south of Dominica and north of Saint Lucia. The highest point on the island is Mount Pelée, a volcano.
