Marshal of the United States Supreme Court

The Marshal of the United States Supreme Court is an officer of the Supreme Court of the United States responsible for the security and maintenance of the Court's building and the safety of the Justices. The position was established in 1867, and the Marshal is appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Marshal's duties include:

  • Ensuring the security of the Supreme Court building and its grounds.
  • Overseeing the operations of the Supreme Court Police.
  • Managing the Court's budget and procurement.
  • Serving as the Court's building manager, responsible for maintenance and operations.
  • Calling the Court to order at the beginning of each session.
  • Performing ceremonial functions, such as escorting the Justices during official events.

Supreme Court Police

The Supreme Court Police is a federal law enforcement agency under the authority of the Marshal. The police force is responsible for protecting the Justices, Court staff, and visitors, as well as securing the Supreme Court building and its surrounding area.

Appointment and Tenure

The Marshal is appointed by the Chief Justice of the United States and serves at the pleasure of the Court. The position does not have a fixed term, and the Marshal can be replaced at any time.

Historical Background

The position of Marshal was created by an act of Congress in 1867 to address the growing need for security and administrative oversight within the Supreme Court. The first Marshal was Richard C. Parsons, who served from 1867 to 1872.
