Marquette is a red wine grape variety that was developed by the University of Minnesota in the United States. It is a hybrid grape, created by crossing the European grape variety Vitis vinifera with the North American grape species Vitis riparia. Marquette is known for its ability to withstand cold climates, making it a popular choice for winemakers in the Midwest, Northeast, and Canada.

History

The development of Marquette began in the 1990s at the University of Minnesota's grape breeding program. The goal was to create a grape variety that could thrive in the harsh winters of the northern United States. After years of crossbreeding and selection, Marquette was released for commercial use in 2006.

Characteristics

Marquette grapes are small to medium-sized, with a deep blue-black color when fully ripe. The berries have a thick skin, which contributes to their ability to withstand cold temperatures. The flavor profile of Marquette wine is often described as rich and complex, with notes of cherry, blackberry, and spice.

Viticulture

Marquette is well-suited for cool climate viticulture, as it has a high level of resistance to common grape diseases and can tolerate temperatures as low as -30°F (-34°C). The grape variety is known for its early bud break and ripening, which helps it avoid late spring frosts and allows for a longer growing season.

Winemaking

Marquette is primarily used to produce red wines, although it can also be used in rosé and sparkling wine production. The grapes are typically harvested in late September or early October, depending on the region. The wine is known for its deep red color, medium body, and balanced acidity. It can be aged in oak barrels to enhance its complexity and develop additional flavors.

Notable Wines

Marquette has gained recognition for its quality and has won numerous awards in wine competitions. Some notable wineries that produce Marquette wines include Winery A and Winery B.
