Marcella Nunez-Smith is an American physician and public health expert. Early Life and Education

Marcella Nunez-Smith was born in the United States Virgin Islands. She pursued her undergraduate education at Swarthmore College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. She then attended the Jefferson Medical College (now known as Sidney Kimmel Medical College) at Thomas Jefferson University, where she obtained her medical degree. Nunez-Smith completed her residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and a fellowship in general internal medicine at Yale University.

Career

Nunez-Smith is a professor of internal medicine, public health, and management at the Yale School of Medicine. She also serves as the director of the Equity Research and Innovation Center (ERIC) at Yale. Her research focuses on promoting health and healthcare equity for structurally marginalized populations, with an emphasis on identifying and addressing the social determinants of health.

In addition to her academic roles, Nunez-Smith has been involved in various national initiatives aimed at reducing health disparities. She has served on numerous advisory boards and committees, including the National Academy of Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

COVID-19 Pandemic

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nunez-Smith played a critical role in addressing the disproportionate impact of the virus on communities of color. She was appointed by President Joe Biden to serve as the chair of the COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force. In this role, she led efforts to ensure equitable access to COVID-19 testing, treatment, and vaccination.
