Mammaplasty

Mammaplasty (pronounced: /ˈmæməˌplæsti/) is a term used in medicine to refer to any surgical procedure that modifies the size or shape of the breast. The term is derived from the Greek words "mamma" meaning breast and "plasty" meaning molding or forming.

Types of Mammaplasty

There are several types of mammaplasty, including:

  • Reduction Mammaplasty: Also known as breast reduction, this procedure is used to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with the body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts.
  • Mastopexy: Commonly known as a breast lift, this procedure raises the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue to reshape and support the new breast contour.

Procedure

The specific steps of a mammaplasty procedure vary depending on the type of procedure and the desired outcome. However, all types of mammaplasty are typically performed under anesthesia and involve making incisions in the breast tissue, modifying the breast tissue, and closing the incisions with sutures or surgical tape.

Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, mammaplasty carries some risks, including infection, poor healing of incisions, changes in nipple or breast sensation, and anesthesia risks. Complications specific to breast implants include capsular contracture, implant leakage or rupture, and the need for revision surgery.
