Malayalam (Malayalam: മലയാളം) is a Dravidian language spoken in the Indian state of Kerala and the union territories of Lakshadweep and Puducherry by the Malayali people. It is one of 22 scheduled languages of India.

Etymology

The term Malayalam originally referred to the land itself (mala meaning mountain and alam meaning land or locality). However, the term later became the name of the language spoken in this region.
