MRPS24

From WikiMD's Medical Encyclopedia

MRPS24 (Mitochondrial Ribosomal Protein S24) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the MRPS24 gene. This protein is a component of the mitochondrial ribosome, which is specialized for the synthesis of mitochondrial proteins. The mitochondrial ribosome is distinct from the cytoplasmic ribosomes that are responsible for the majority of protein synthesis within a cell. MRPS24 plays a critical role in the assembly and function of the small subunit of the mitochondrial ribosome.

Function[edit]

MRPS24 is involved in the production of mitochondrial DNA-encoded proteins, which are essential for the mitochondrial electron transport chain and ATP synthesis. This process is crucial for cellular respiration and energy production in cells. The protein is one of the many mitochondrial ribosomal proteins (MRPs) that are necessary for the proper assembly and functioning of the mitochondrial ribosome.

Genetic Structure[edit]

The MRPS24 gene is located on the human chromosome 2. It consists of multiple exons and introns that encode the MRPS24 protein. Mutations in the MRPS24 gene can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction due to impaired mitochondrial protein synthesis, potentially resulting in a variety of mitochondrial diseases.

Clinical Significance[edit]

Alterations in the MRPS24 gene have been associated with mitochondrial disorders, which are a group of genetically and clinically heterogeneous diseases. These disorders can affect multiple organ systems, including the nervous system, muscular system, and cardiovascular system. The specific role of MRPS24 mutations in these diseases is an area of ongoing research.
