MKUltra
MKUltra (pronounced: em-kay-ul-tra), also known as Project MKUltra, was a covert operation conducted by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the mid-20th century. The project began in the early 1950s and was officially sanctioned in 1953, with operations officially halted in 1973.
Etymology
The term "MKUltra" is derived from the designation given to the project by the CIA. "MK" stands for the agency's Technical Services Staff, and "Ultra" was a reference to the highest level of security classification in World War II.
Overview
MKUltra involved the use of many methodologies to manipulate people's mental states and alter brain functions. This included the surreptitious administration of drugs (especially LSD) and other chemicals, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, verbal and sexual abuse, as well as various forms of torture.
