MARCOS (Marine Commandos), also known as Marine Commando Force (MCF), is the special forces unit of the Indian Navy. It was created for conducting special operations such as amphibious warfare, counter-terrorism, direct action, special reconnaissance, unconventional warfare, and hostage rescue.

History[edit]

MARCOS was established in February 1987 as the Indian Marine Special Force (IMSF). The unit was later renamed to Marine Commandos (MARCOS) in 1991. The need for a specialized force was felt after the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) operations in Sri Lanka and the Operation Pawan.

Training[edit]

The training regimen for MARCOS is one of the most rigorous in the world. It includes a two-year-long training program that covers various aspects of special operations, including parachuting, diving, demolition, and counter-insurgency operations.
