Luigi Cornaro

Luigi Cornaro (pronounced: loo-ee-jee kor-nah-ro), also known as Aloysius Cornarus (1467–1566), was an Italian nobleman who wrote extensively on the benefits of a long life through dietary restriction. His most famous work, Discorsi della vita sobria (Discourses on the Sober Life), has been influential in the development of gerontology and nutrition.

Etymology

The name Luigi is of Italian origin and is the Italian form of the French name Louis, which means "famous warrior". Cornaro is a surname of Venetian origin, likely derived from the name of the town of Cornaro in the Veneto region of Italy.

Life and Works

Luigi Cornaro was born into a noble family in Venice in 1467. He lived a life of excess until his health deteriorated in his 40s. After adopting a strict diet of limited and measured food and wine, he regained his health and lived to the age of 98 or 102 (sources vary).

His book, Discorsi della vita sobria, was written in four volumes between 1558 and 1566. In it, Cornaro argued for a life of moderation, particularly in eating and drinking, as the key to longevity. His ideas were controversial at the time but have since been recognized as early insights into the benefits of a balanced diet and moderate lifestyle.
