Lucille Teasdale-Corti (pronunciation: loo-seel tez-dale kor-tee) was a renowned Canadian pediatric surgeon and international humanitarian.
Etymology
The name "Lucille" is of French origin, meaning "light". "Teasdale" is an English surname, derived from a place name in Yorkshire, and "Corti" is an Italian surname.
Biography
Lucille Teasdale-Corti was born on January 30, 1929, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She was one of the first female surgeons in Quebec and one of the first Western surgeons in Uganda. In 1961, she co-founded St. Mary's Hospital Lacor in Gulu, Uganda, with her husband, Dr. Piero Corti. Despite numerous challenges, including civil war and the AIDS epidemic, she dedicated her life to providing medical care to the people of Uganda until her death in 1996.
Medical Career
Teasdale-Corti graduated from the University of Montreal's School of Medicine in 1955. She specialized in pediatric surgery and worked in several hospitals in France and Canada before moving to Uganda. At St. Mary's Hospital Lacor, she performed thousands of surgeries and trained many Ugandan doctors and nurses. She also played a crucial role in the fight against AIDS in Uganda.
Humanitarian Work
In addition to her medical work, Teasdale-Corti was a dedicated humanitarian. She advocated for the rights of women and children and worked tirelessly to improve healthcare in Uganda. Her efforts were recognized with numerous awards, including the Order of Canada and the United Nations' Human Rights Award.
