Louis Émile Javal
French ophthalmologist known for his work on strabismus and reading disorders
Louis Émile Javal (5 May 1839 – 20 January 1907) was a French ophthalmologist renowned for his pioneering work in the study of strabismus and reading disorders. He made significant contributions to the understanding of eye movements and binocular vision.
Early life and education[edit]
Louis Émile Javal was born in Paris, France, into a family of Alsatian origin. He pursued his medical studies in Paris, where he developed an interest in ophthalmology. Javal's early work focused on the mechanics of eye movements and the physiology of vision.
Career[edit]
Javal became a professor of ophthalmology and directed the ophthalmology laboratory at the Sorbonne. His research was instrumental in advancing the understanding of strabismus, a condition where the eyes do not properly align with each other when looking at an object. He developed several devices to measure and correct strabismus, including the Javal-Schiötz ophthalmometer, which is used to measure the curvature of the cornea.

Contributions to ophthalmology[edit]
Javal's work extended beyond strabismus to include the study of reading disorders. He was one of the first to systematically study the movements of the eyes during reading, known as saccades. His observations laid the groundwork for future research into dyslexia and other reading difficulties.
Javal also contributed to the development of orthoptics, a field of vision therapy aimed at improving binocular vision and treating disorders such as strabismus and amblyopia.
Legacy[edit]
Louis Émile Javal's contributions to ophthalmology have had a lasting impact on the field. His work on eye movements and reading disorders continues to influence research and clinical practice today. The Javal-Schiötz ophthalmometer remains a valuable tool in the diagnosis and management of corneal conditions.
