Longs Drugs

Longs Drugs is a pharmacy chain that was founded in 1938 by brothers Joe and Tom Long. The chain, which was based in Oakland, California, was acquired by CVS Health in 2008.

History

Joe Long and Tom Long founded Longs Drugs in 1938. The first store was located in Oakland, California. The chain expanded rapidly throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and other parts of California. By the 1970s, Longs Drugs had also expanded into Hawaii, Nevada, and Arizona.

In 2008, CVS Health, a leading pharmacy chain in the United States, acquired Longs Drugs for $2.9 billion. The acquisition included all of the Longs Drugs stores in California, Hawaii, Nevada, and Arizona. Following the acquisition, the Longs Drugs stores were rebranded as CVS/pharmacy.

Services

Longs Drugs offered a variety of services, including prescription filling, over-the-counter medication, health and beauty products, and photo processing. The chain was known for its wide selection of merchandise and its commitment to customer service.

Impact

Longs Drugs was a significant player in the retail pharmacy industry. The chain was known for its innovative practices, such as the introduction of self-service shopping in the 1950s. Longs Drugs was also one of the first pharmacy chains to offer 24-hour service.
