Ancient and Medieval Periods
- Pedanius Dioscorides (c. 40–90 AD) - A Greek physician, pharmacologist, and botanist, Dioscorides authored De Materia Medica, a 5-volume encyclopedia about herbal medicine that was used extensively for over 1,500 years.
- Galen (129–c. 200/c. 216) - A prominent Greek physician, surgeon, and philosopher in the Roman Empire who made significant contributions to the understanding of medicine, including compounding medicines.
Renaissance to 18th Century
- Paracelsus (1493–1541) - A Swiss physician and alchemist who introduced the concept of chemical medicine, with the belief that the body is a chemical system that can be treated with chemical remedies.
- Nicholas Culpeper (1616–1654) - An English botanist, herbalist, physician, and astrologer, Culpeper published The English Physitian (1652), an extensive directory of herbal medicines.
19th Century
- Friedrich Sertürner (1783–1841) - A German pharmacist who first isolated morphine from opium in 1804, marking the birth of alkaloid chemistry.
- William Procter Jr. (1817–1874) - Often referred to as the "Father of American Pharmacy," he was a prominent American pharmacist and a co-founder of the American Pharmaceutical Association (now the American Pharmacists Association).
20th Century to Present
- Tu Youyou (Born 1930) - A Chinese pharmaceutical chemist and malariologist who discovered artemisinin and dihydroartemisinin, used to treat malaria, which earned her the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2015.
- Dennis P. H. Hsieh (1935–2017) - A Taiwanese-American pharmacist known for his work in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
- Cynthia Mary Kenyon (Born 1954) - An American biochemist and geneticist, known for her work in genetics and biogerontology.
