List of apple diseases
List of Apple Diseases is a comprehensive catalogue of the various diseases that can affect apple trees. These diseases can be caused by a variety of pathogens, including fungi, bacteria, and viruses, as well as by environmental stressors. Some of these diseases can cause significant damage to apple crops, leading to economic losses for apple growers.
Fungal Diseases
- Apple Scab (Venturia inaequalis): This is one of the most common and serious diseases of apple. It is caused by the fungus Venturia inaequalis, which creates dark, scaly lesions on the leaves, fruit, and twigs of the apple tree.
- Cedar-Apple Rust (Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae): This disease is caused by a fungus that requires two hosts to complete its life cycle: an apple tree and a cedar tree. The disease causes yellow spots on the leaves and fruit of the apple tree.
- Black Rot (Botryosphaeria obtusa): This fungal disease causes dark, sunken lesions on the fruit and can also affect the leaves and branches of the apple tree.
Bacterial Diseases
- Fire Blight (Erwinia amylovora): This bacterial disease causes wilting, blackening, and a "burned" appearance of branches. It can also affect the fruit, causing it to shrivel and blacken.
- Crown Gall (Agrobacterium tumefaciens): This disease is caused by a bacterium that induces the formation of large, tumor-like galls on the roots and lower trunk of the apple tree.
Viral Diseases
- Apple Mosaic Virus: This virus causes a mottled or mosaic pattern to appear on the leaves of the apple tree.
- Apple Chlorotic Leaf Spot Virus: This virus causes yellowing and spotting of the leaves, and can also cause a reduction in fruit yield.
Environmental Stressors
- Frost Damage: Frost can cause damage to the blossoms and young fruit of the apple tree, leading to a reduction in yield.
- Drought Stress: Lack of water can lead to wilting, leaf drop, and a reduction in fruit size and yield.
