Anxiolytics

Anxiolytics (/æŋksɪˈɒlɪtɪks/; from Greek: anxiety and treat) are a category of medications used in the treatment of anxiety disorders and their related psychological and physical symptoms. Anxiolytics have been shown to be useful in the treatment of anxiety disorders.

Etymology

The term "anxiolytic" originates from the Greek words anxiety, meaning "to choke", and treat, meaning "to loosen". Thus, anxiolytics are agents that "loosen" or "relieve" anxiety.

Types of Anxiolytics

There are several types of anxiolytics, including:

  • Benzodiazepines: These are the most commonly prescribed anxiolytics. They work by enhancing the effect of the neurotransmitter GABA in the brain, which has a calming effect.
  • Buspirone: This is a non-benzodiazepine anxiolytic that works by affecting the serotonin and dopamine systems in the brain.
  • Antidepressants: Some types of antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), are also used as anxiolytics.
  • Beta blockers: These are used off-label to treat the physical symptoms of anxiety, such as rapid heartbeat.
