5α-Reductase inhibitors are a group of drugs that are used in the treatment of conditions brought about by DHT (dihydrotestosterone), an androgen sex steroid and hormone. These inhibitors work by preventing the conversion of testosterone to DHT by the enzyme 5α-reductase.

Types of 5α-Reductase Inhibitors

There are two types of 5α-reductase inhibitors, namely Type I and Type II.

Type I 5α-Reductase Inhibitors are primarily used in the treatment of hirsutism and acne in women. They are also used in the treatment of prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia in men.

Type II 5α-Reductase Inhibitors are used in the treatment of conditions such as male pattern baldness, prostate cancer, and benign prostatic hyperplasia.

• Epristeride - This is a 5α-reductase inhibitor that is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.

• Alfatradiol - This is a 5α-reductase inhibitor that is used in the treatment of pattern hair loss in women.

Side Effects

Like all drugs, 5α-reductase inhibitors also have potential side effects. These may include sexual dysfunction, depression, and an increased risk of high-grade prostate cancer.
