Lipid Hypothesis

The Lipid Hypothesis (pronounced: /ˈlɪpɪd haɪˈpɒθɪsɪs/) is a medical theory that suggests a direct relationship between the amount of saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet and the incidence of coronary heart disease.

Etymology

The term "Lipid Hypothesis" is derived from the Greek word "lipos" meaning fat, and "hypothesis" from the Greek word "hupothesis" meaning foundation or basis.

Overview

The Lipid Hypothesis was first proposed in the mid-20th century by Ancel Keys, an American physiologist. According to this hypothesis, high levels of certain types of lipids in the bloodstream—specifically, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol—contribute to the development of atherosclerosis and, by extension, to heart disease.
