Life skills (pronunciation: /laɪf skɪlz/) are abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable humans to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of life. The concept is also called psychosocial competency.

Etymology

The term 'life skills' is derived from the words 'life' and 'skills'. 'Life' (Old English: līf) refers to the existence of an individual human being or animal, while 'skills' (Old Norse: skil) refers to the ability to do something well.

Definition

The World Health Organization defines life skills as "abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life". They are a set of human skills acquired via teaching or direct experience that are used to handle problems and questions commonly encountered in daily human life.

Types of Life Skills

Life skills can be categorized into several types:

  • Decision Making: The ability to choose between different options and make sound judgments.
  • Problem Solving: The ability to understand a problem, find possible solutions, and take appropriate action.
  • Communication Skills: The ability to express oneself clearly and effectively.
  • Self-awareness: The ability to understand one's own emotions, strengths, and weaknesses.
  • Empathy: The ability to understand and share the feelings of others.
  • Interpersonal Relationships: The ability to interact positively with others.
  • Coping with Stress: The ability to handle stress and pressure in a positive way.
  • Coping with Emotions: The ability to handle emotions effectively, including anger, sadness, and happiness.

Importance of Life Skills

Life skills are essential for maintaining psychological well-being and leading a healthy and productive life. They help individuals to communicate effectively, solve problems, make decisions, be creative, build healthy relationships, empathize with others, and cope with and manage their lives in a healthy and productive manner.
