Lidocaine/prilocaine
Lidocaine/Prilocaine
Lidocaine/Prilocaine (pronunciation: ly-doe-kane/ pril-oh-kane) is a combination of two local anesthetics, Lidocaine and Prilocaine. It is used to numb the skin or surfaces of other body parts before certain medical procedures.
Etymology
The term "Lidocaine" is derived from the Swedish words "Lid" meaning "pain" and "caine" from the Latin "canna" meaning "reed", referring to its use as a local anesthetic. "Prilocaine" is a combination of the words "prilo" from the Latin "prilis" meaning "early" and "caine", again referring to its use as an anesthetic.
Usage
Lidocaine/Prilocaine is used to prevent pain during certain medical procedures such as inserting a needle, skin grafts, or skin laser surgery. It works by temporarily numbing the skin and surrounding area. It should not be used on large areas of damaged skin, on cuts or open wounds, or on skin that is infected.

Side Effects
Common side effects of Lidocaine/Prilocaine include redness, swelling, or lightening of the skin where the medicine was applied. Serious side effects are rare but can include severe allergic reactions, irregular heartbeat, and seizures.
Precautions
Before using Lidocaine/Prilocaine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to Lidocaine, Prilocaine, or any other anesthetics. Also, inform them about your medical history, especially of certain blood disorders (methemoglobinemia), liver disease, or heart disease.
