Lexicographic order

Lexicographic order, also known as lexical order, dictionary order, or alphabetic order, is a method of sorting sequences of characters or symbols in a predetermined order. If one sequence is a prefix of the other, the shorter sequence is considered to be lexicographically smaller. Given two elements a = (a1, a2, ..., an) and b = (b1, b2, ..., bn) in a Cartesian product A1 × A2 × ... × An, a is said to precede b in lexicographic order if there exists an index j such that for all i < j, ai = bi, and aj < bj in the order defined on Aj.
