Lewisham is a district in South East London, England, located in the London Borough of Lewisham. It is situated 5.9 miles (9.5 km) southeast of Charing Cross. Lewisham is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London.
History[edit]
Lewisham's history dates back to the 6th century when it was established as a small village. The name "Lewisham" is derived from the Old English name "Leofshema," meaning "the house among the meadows." The area developed significantly during the 19th century with the arrival of the railway.
Geography[edit]
Lewisham is bordered by Deptford to the northwest, Blackheath to the north, Catford to the south, and Brockley to the west. The River Ravensbourne runs through the area, contributing to its green spaces.
